About Elise, Pierre and Marlene

Who are we?

Smiling Scholar Teaching Resources is a labour of love bytwo homeschool parents (Elise and Pierre) and their now-grown-up daughter(Marlene). Our resources are the fruit over more than a decade of homeschoolingin the Montreal area.

Why make our own resources?

We wanted to share the best aspects of our own educationswith our growing daughter (the high quality literature, old-fashioned methodssuch as memorisation and a strong focus on reading and writing) while avoidingthe parts we found less helpful (the unnecessarily dismal content, and the‘filler’ that took time and taught nothing).

Sometimes we found what we needed via mainstream curricula,sometimes we relied on home-grown lessons made by other teachers and tutors,and sometimes we turned to our own experience as teachers (and students) tocreate something new.

Did we make our resources from scratch?

Yes! Elise wrote the books; Pierre edited, had the finalword on the design, and is the French language expert; and Marlene bothinspired and tested each resource as she made her way through school. She stillgraciously takes a peek at newer additions to the catalogue, as they emergefrom the pile of ideas and find their way to you.

Smiling Scholar today

Marlene is now at university and our homeschooling days arebehind us. We still add a new resource from time to time, as there is quite acollection of yet to be published lessons waiting in line. If you want, signup for our monthly newsletter for announcements (no spam).

You won’t find any pictures of us on social media, but feelfree to picture us drinking tea, playing chess, taking long walks or enjoying agood book. Any of these is a possible daily event!
